Some 65 members and guests gathered
for the Society's annual Croquet and Pimm's Garden Party, set on the verdant
lawns of the Cricket Club. Following several weekends of rain, the party
was blessed with pleasant sunshine, and guests sipped Pimm's and ate a full
English tea, including scones with Devonshire cream, sitting on the lawns.
As ever, croquet was popular,
reminding members of their epicurean days in Oxbridge's quads. With
two championship pitches set out, there were opportunities for all to play,
including instruction all afternoon for beginners. The
seventh annual Hong Kong Varsity croquet match was held during the afternoon;
going into the match Oxford and Cambridge were three all, but Oxford won in a
close finish, leaving Cambridge the task of equalising at the 2010 Garden
Party.
