Lantau Cultural Walk

Saturday, 13th November, 2010

Exit B,Tung Chung MTR Station

10:15 AM

This walk will begin at the Tung Chung MTR Station where we shall meet at Exit B for a 10:15 a.m. start. From there we shall walk to Tai O, a distance of some 12 kms. (Double the distance we walked last year on a similar hike from Pak Mong to Mui Wo). The walk is not technically demanding, being mostly on concrete paths with some hills with steps or gentle inclines. However, there is no departure point from the route except at Tung Chung and Tai O so a fair degree of fitness and stamina is required.

The route takes us to a Tang Dynasty lime kiln, and we shall visit the remains of the Tung Chung Battery which was originally built in 1817. We stroll through the delightful old fishing village of Tung Chung and reach the Hau Wong Temple, built around 1765. Following the coast we have fine views of the Chek Lap Kok airport and we pass through several villages, notably Sha Lo Wan and Sham Wat with its lungnan trees. The route rises, with fine cliff views as we approach Tai O. This old village is famous for its stilt houses, making shrimp paste, its bascule bridge and its old salt workings – perhaps Hong Kong’s earliest industry. Tai O has several temples and we aim to arrive there by about 6 p.m. in time for an optional self-pay dinner in a local Chinese restaurant.

From Tai O there are regular buses back to the Tung Chung MTR and to Mui Wo for the ferry to Central.

Our guide will be Mr Peter Stuckey, a member of the Oxbridge Society of Hong Kong. He will give brief talks of the highlights of our trail. Please wear reliable walking shoes, and bring a packed lunch and plenty to drink.

The cost will be HK$100 for adults and $60 for children. Children who are capable of completing the 12 km hike are welcome provided they are accompanied by their parents who accept full responsibility for those children.
