The Oxford & Cambridge
Society offers a not-to-be-missed opportunity to hear and ask questions of Mrs
Anson Chan, who continues to be an outstanding personality in Hong Kong's
political scene, with her founding of the Citizens’ Commission on Constitutinal
Development last year after she decided not to seek re-election to the
Legislative Council. She will speak on a
topic very close to her heart – “Hong Kong in the 21st century”.
Mrs Chan is a graduate of
Hong Kong University and was one of the first female Administrative Officers in
the Hong Kong Government, being recruited to the grade in 1962. Her senior posts in the Government included
Director of Social Welfare, Secretary for Economic Services and Secretary for
the Civil Service, culminating, in 1993, in her appointment as the first local
and first female Chief Secretary for Administration. She continued in this post through the
Reunification, finally retiring in 2001.
Her active life proved far from over, however, and her interest in
constitutional and community affairs led first to her founding her "Core
Group" to study constitutional issues, and successfully being elected into
the Legislative Council, to the establishment of the Citizens' Commission on Constitutional
Development as Convenor of its Steering Group in 2008.
Mrs Chan has spoken to the
Society on previous occasions and these have proved immensely popular events,
thanks to her eloquence and charisma.
A
Chinese banquet dinner will be served with wines in the elegant surroundings of
the Hong Kong Bankers Club.
Tickets for this special
event are: HK$500 for members and HK$550 for guests. Priority for seats will be given to members. |
