ANNUAL BOAT RACE DINNER

Saturday, 16th April 2011

Members and their guests are cordially invited to our Boat Race Dinner to be held on Saturday, 16th April 2011 at the Hong Kong Bankers Club.  Cocktails will start from 7:00pm together with the viewing of the 2011 Boat Race.  The Annual General Meeting of the Society will commence at 6:30pm sharp.

 

The toast to Oxford will be given by Mr. Victor Apps  (Downing College, Cambridge).  Mr. Apps received his MA in Mathematics and Physics in 1970 from Cambridge University; He is a past president of Oxford & Cambridge Society in 2005-2006. He retired from his role of Senior Executive Vice President and General Manager, Asia, Manulife Financial on 1st January 2007. Before retirement, he was responsible for Manulife Financial’s insurance and wealth management operations in Asia. He was also a member of the Manulife Financial’s Executive Committee. Mr Apps joined Manulife Financial, Canada in 1970 and was appointed Administrative Vice President in 1981. In March 1985, Mr Apps was appointed General Manager, Manulife Indonesia and in 1988, he became International Vice President, Asia Pacific Division with responsibility for all Asian operations outside Hong Kong. Subsequently, he was appointed Vice President and General Manager, Greater China Division in 1993 with responsibility for China, Hong Kong and Taiwan. Mr Apps was the first Chairman of Manulife-Sinochem Life Insurance Company Limited, the first joint venture insurance company approved in the People’s Republic of China. From 1990 to 1996, he led Manulife’s team negotiating entry into China.

 

The toast to Cambridge will be given by Mrs. Rachel Cartland (Lady Margaret Hall, Oxford). Mrs. Cartland received her undergraduate degree in politics and philosophy from Oxford University in 1972. She joined the Administrative Grade of the Hong Kong Civil Service where she worked until her retirement from service in early 2006. During her time with Government she served in a variety of senior posts and has wide experience of policy formulation and the workings of the civil service. When Deputy Secretary for Recreation and Culture, she oversaw the legislative and regulatory framework for the introduction of cable and satellite TV and the setting up of the Arts Development Council, among other things.  As Assistant Director of Social Welfare (Social Security) she had responsibility for an annual budget of HK$25 billion and 2000 staff.  Rachel now undertakes public sector consulting while current community service includes the Hong Kong Foresight Centre (founding Councillor), the Tender Committee for the Renovation of the Fringe, HKU's SPACE Academic Committee for the Higher Diploma in Social Security, Vision 2047, and the Women’s Foundation (Board of Governors). Mrs. Cartland has been long standing committee member of Oxford & Cambridge Society and held the position as President in 2007-2008.

We are deeply honoured that Prof. Andrew Hamilton, Vice-Chancellor of Oxford University has accepted our invitation to attend at this event.  We are very pleased that Professor Hamilton will also be speaking to us at the dinner and he looks forward to having the opportunity to meet with the alumni members of both universities.

 

The cost of the Boat Race Dinner: HK$800/person for members and HK$850/person for guests which includes cocktails and a four course dinner with wines. Dress code: Black Tie.

Notice is hereby given that the Annual General Meeting (“AGM”) of the Oxford and Cambridge Society of Hong Kong will be held on Saturday 16th April 2011, starting at 6:30 p.m., immediately prior to the Annual Boat Race dinner.  The venue is the Hong Kong Bankers Club, 43rd Floor, Gloucester Tower, The Landmark, 11 Pedder Street, Central, Hong Kong.  Please note that only Members of the Society can attend and vote at the AGM.  There will be free drinks served at the AGM and you are welcome to attend even if you cannot make the subsequent Boat Race dinner.
